Adventures with Smokey Bear & Firefighter Oak!
This year is Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday!
For Story Hour #4 we watched a video about Smokey, & we made a birthday card for him. The kids pledged to Never play with matches, and they all got Smokey career cards & stickers. Anyone who visits the library before July 8th can also sign the card & pick up some Smokey resources.
It was neat to see some vintage Smokey memorabilia from Teresa’s collection. ♥
◊
Our special guest for Story Hour was Volunteer Firefighter, Lyn Oak.
She showed us the uniform she wears when fighting grass fires. (It is lighter & a little cooler than the black uniforms they wear when fighting structure fires.)
◊
The kids had lots of questions (& stories) to share. And, one was a great reminder to never put used fireworks in a trashcan by the house! (Remember that bucket of water this Fourth of July!)
We played a S’Mores Relay (cardboard ingredients = no crumbs or stickiness! 😉 )
And, kids completed Smokey activity sheets.
Participants also signed a THANK YOU card for our local Volunteer Firefighters.
◊
We appreciate all they do to keep us SAFE!
◊
Kids then decorated stickers to put on water bottles we donated to the firefighters.
◊
Info sheets were sent home reminding everyone about our upcoming programs (ANIMALS next week, followed by our Grand Finale & Pool Party!).
◊
Information was also given about smoke alarms available (while supplies last).
◊
Remember to get reading logs filled out before July 8th if you want to be in the prize drawing for inflatables, camping gear, & more.
Our collage made great strides Monday… can you see what it is?
◊
We finished the day with some yummy, Fire-Free S’mores Trail Mix! (Smokey would be proud!)
◊
Remember– Summer Reading for YA & Adults runs through July 31st. Still time to sign up!
And, ask about the Library Crawl when you visit… you might win a prize by entering!
