Be the “I” in KIND! Summer Reading #3
Summer Reading is an exciting time for NEW BOOKS at the library!
Thanks to a $2,250 Summer Reading Grant from Dollar General, we were able to purchase some new books, many specially requested by students. From Dog Man to Bad Kitty, and from the Titanic to WWII, you never know what the kids find interesting- but we are so thankful for funds to add relevant books to our shelves* (*actually, we’re still raising money for the shelves- but you know what we mean!). Grant funds are also helping fund some craft supplies, two mobile bulletin boards, a cubby storage unit & more! (Check back later for more details!)
Today, after previewing the new books, we strove to recreate another Summer Reading poster idea. The kids “ALL” Together spelled the word A-L-L… (Next week we’ll tackle “Together”)
Since KINDNESS was the theme of the day- kids shared some book characters who were kind: like Charlotte, the spider, and Horton, the elephant. We then brainstormed ideas of ways we could be kind.
We read the story: We Will ROCK our CLASSMATES by Ryan T. Higgins, & every family received a copy to keep.
Then, it was CRAFT time! Kids made handprint pages telling how they planned to lend a hand of kindness…
Bonus— If they accomplish a kindness & tell the librarian about it they get a special Horton KIND button! (two kids have already earned theirs! :))
Then, kids colored Horton Kindness bookmarks & took photos in front of our “Be the ‘I’ in KIND!” backdrop.
Finally, books were checked out, Brag Tags picked, & snacks snagged!
If you missed today (or any previous Story Hour), feel free to stop by the library during other open hours to catch up on crafts, take a KIND photo, see the new books (we have new Adult & Young Adult books, too!), or Sign up for Summer Reading (ALL AGES!)!
