Certifiably READY to Help!
Anyone need a babysitter? Is someone choking? Feeling faint?
In case of Emergency, many students at Macksville High School are now ready to lend a helping hand!
The Macksville City Library received a $2,000 grant from the South Central Community Foundation to provide potentially lifesaving training to MHS Freshmen, Intro to FCS, and Human A&P students.
The library partnered with MHS teachers Carrie Newdigger, Kat McAllister & Kyle Bright to offer Adult, Child & Infant CPR, First Aid, & AED training as part of an online course through the American Red Cross. Hands-on training was given by school nurse, Becky Filbert. The grant also enabled the library to purchase a new infant manikin & AED trainer for MHS students to use while training.
In response to the training, one student commented: “It was good to do the CPR certification because if one of your family members is hurt you could help them.” Another said that it would be valuable to have when working as a waitress in the future, where choking is very common.
Mrs. McAllister noted that many of her students were “… interested in the ‘health field’ and they really enjoyed it.” She added that some planned to get their CNA license, so this definitely “… helps get them started! “
Family Consumer Science teacher, Laura Woolf, utilized the American Red Cross’ online Babysitting Basics course to teach her students childcare basics, how to prepare age-appropriate activities, and more!
This course can help students when babysitting siblings, setting up a business, responding to health emergencies, and other interactions.
Through the grant, the library was also able to purchase a variety of Babysitting books (for informational and recreational reading) which will be available year round.
Thank you, South Central Community Foundation, for providing this potentially life-changing training, for the valuable resources & for your dedication to children’s health and education in South-Central Kansas, and beyond!
