Earth Day – O.K. Kids Event
Thank you, to the Kansas Wildscape Foundation for helping sponsor our Earth Day Program at the Macksville City Library!
With the grant we were able to purchase ten awesome new books for our shelves, plus a prize book for one winner in each class.
AND, each student and teacher got to take home two flowers to plant at home. ♥
During the event, grades Pre-K through 6th visited the library. Students learned about the history of Earth Day, about the Wildlifer Program (KansasWildlifer.com), and what the three arrows on the Recycling Symbol mean. We learned about the Do’s & Dont’s of recycling: from what can go in our local BROWN recycling bins, to what can be recycled in a STORE DROP-OFF bin. Students also played a game of Heads or Tails to win a book about animals.
Thanks to all the teachers & students who braved the wind to get OUTDOORS and attend our OK Kids event! We couldn’t plant marigold seeds due to the high winds, but they will be planted soon. And, Thank you to Elvia & Yenilyn for helping prepare the flowers for all of the kids… 126 labeled bags of flowers was a HUGE task!
I’ve already heard from multiple kids wanting to sign up for the Wildlifer Challenge (Fishing, hiking, or tree climbing, anyone?!).
One quote we talked about was from Benjamin Franklin: “When the well’s dry, we know the worth of water.” In this current drought, the kids could truly relate.
And, hopefully, they can teach others about ways they can help care for & enjoy our beautiful Earth!
Happy Earth Day EVERY Day!
