Fizz! POP-UP! Read! #2
Our second Story Hour was a (much needed) RAINY day, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the dedicated 26 kids in attendance!
Our guest speaker was local author, Lyn Fenwick (click on the link to her blog at right, for more pictures & info). Since SCIENCE is the focus of our Summer Reading Program, Lyn shared with us the science of book-making… focusing on paper engineers and their AMAZING creations. We saw one of Lyn’s very first pop-up books, a well cared for Christmas story with simple moving parts. Then, we saw how paper engineering has progressed through the years… from tabs & wheels to OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD creations by engineers like Robert Sabuda, that had the kids (and adults) Oooohing and Aaaaahhhhhhing with each turn of the page!
After seeing all the books, the kids made their own Pop-Up cards for dads, grandpas and special people in their lives. If you would like to make your own pop-up cards (we chose lions, owls & more), you can visit robertsabuda.com and find easy & intricate templates, plus information about paper engineering and books by Mr. Sabuda.
Kids also had a special surprise to take home from story hour. With our Dollar General Summer Reading grant, we purchased “Mustang Stampede!” backpacks for each attendee.
Summer reading participants: if you missed this story hour, be sure to check in soon to get your backpack!
REMEMBER: Our OK Kids Animal Program will be on Tuesday, June 17th from 10:00 to 11:30am @ the Macksville City Park! Hope to see you there!
