Wow!  September 3rd, 2011– what a busy day in Macksville, Kansas!  With so much going on around town, it was nearly impossible to experience it all.  If you click on the link to the St. John News (at right), you can search for more pictures from the parade and other happenings around town.

Our author talk with Cheryl Unruh was a success and a wonderful way to showcase a little history from the library and town, as well.  In all, 40 people took part.   We had displays of yearbooks, P.R.I.D.E. books, and other items relevant to Macksville’s history, while the artwork provided by MHS art classes gave a glimpse of Macksville’s bright future.  Cheryl read a variety of selections from her book, Flyover People, and she shared one other essay she’d written about former MHS art teacher, Benny Broadfoot, which was especially appreciated by the crowd on hand.

In the evening, we had our first ever Family Literacy Program.   Seventy-four people, plus a dozen helpers were on hand for a story+skit, puppet show, and bilingual story, all focusing on different versions of Little Red Riding Hood & the importance of reading to children!  It was a beautiful evening in the park.  Participants enjoyed the entertainment, snacks, magnets, and books & reading tip sheets presented to each family in attendance.
