Kansas Reads to Preschoolers!
Kansas Reads to Preschoolers is an annual event celebrated each November to promote reading to children under the age of five. The selected title for 2019 is I Like Myself! by Karen Beaumont with illustrations by David Catrow. The event is sponsored by the State Library of Kansas. Click here to learn more.
During two different sessions, Macksville City Librarian, Jody Suiter, read the book I Like Myself! to Macksville PreSchoolers and lead them in singing “Head- Shoulders- Knees and Toes!” Students discussed what parts make up their faces and created a self-portrait clothespin craft.
To further promote reading, learning and positive self-esteem from HEAD to TOE, each student received a four pack of Sesame Street socks, generously donated by OutOfPrint.com. The kids guessed the characters on the socks for each color: Red was Elmo and read “Elmo ♥ Books!,” Yellow was Big Bird who said “I Like Big Books,” Blue was Cookie Monster, who’s a “Smart Cookie!” and Green was Oscar the Grouch, who said “Go Away! I’m Reading!”
These “Smart Cookie” kids L–O–V–E–D the socks, and when asked to pick a favorite, most couldn’t settle on only one! 🙂 (Although Elmo and Cookie Monster seemed to get the most votes.)
From The Out Print website: “Since 2010, Out of Print’s mission has been to spread the joy of reading by transforming literary classics into bookish apparel and accessories. With every purchase, you help us to donate books and support literacy programs around the world.” THANK YOU to OutofPrint.com for supporting literacy in this part of the world! ♥
