Reading for the Record!
For the second year in a row, the Macksville City Library participated in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record. On October 7th, we read The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats.
Macksville Grade School students in classes Pre-K through 5th were wonderful listeners as we explored this classic book in five mini-programs. Some age groups played “Snowball, snowball, where is the snowball?” while others followed directions in mimicking Peter’s walk: Toes Out, Toes In, S-l-o-w-l-y, and Slide- “WHEEEE!” Older classes collaborated in rewriting the classic book to represent Kansas and our current season: The Leafy Day!
All told, 142 students heard the story, and we will find out soon if we broke the record. The goal was to have 2.5 million children from all over the world hear the same book on the same day. The charity, Jumpstart, holds this event, in part, to emphasize the HUGE importance of early literacy. We also support this mission and encourage everyone: READ to KIDS! And, if you don’t have books at home- visit your local library! 🙂
