We started Story Hour #4 with a classic tale from 1939, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. Then, we looked at some new books, purchased specifically for Summer Reading. From Fail to Win!, Great Building Designs, and Building Bridges gave us ideas on how engineers and architects strive to build structures that are safe and stand the test of time. We experimented with different shapes of bridge trusses & found that triangles held more weight than squares.  We also found that a suspension bridge can hold LOTS of toy cars!

The new story, Iggy Peck, Architect, got lots of giggles out of the crowd, and then we experimented with the best way to stack blocks/bricks to make a sturdy wall.  Kids each received a magnifying ruler & decorated a paper bag with their own creative wall (ideally overlapping the bricks!)

Kids then each received a pull back toy car to keep & played a HUGE block stacking game. (Keep those hands STEADY!!!)  “Thanks” to our local Girl Scout Troop for the string cheese & Goldfish (Cars) snacks which were treats for all participants.
