Turtle 101- Summer Reading Program #2 with KWEC
Turtles-Turtles- Turtles!
We learned SO MUCH about turtles from our special guest speaker, Pam Martin, from the Kansas Wetlands Education Center!
Pam began with a story: Turtle Splash! Countdown at the Pond, by Cathryn Falwell.
Then, we looked at real turtles, turtle skeletons, photos, & even plush turtles to learn about these interesting creatures.
One little turtle, newly found & probably less than two years old, was definitely the ‘cutie’ of the bunch.
While Kansas turtles were the stars of the show, it was interesting to learn about sea turtles, too. Now we know a little about turtle tears, cold-blooded critters, webbed feet, streamlined shells versus boxy, why sliders got their name, what eye color means in box turtles, & more!
The pancake turtle, with its soft shell & prominent pointy snout was a favorite… have you seen one of his relatives on a recent fishing trip?
Boxy and Salty helped us learn about real turtles!
This little skeleton was fascinating to look at from all angles. But, when naptime hits, we can only hope that pleasant dreams of turtles are being had! 😉
Congrats to the winner of the Kansas Aquatic Turtles poster.
Listening closely pays off!
Hope to see you next week for Story Hour #3!
There’s still time to join the Summer Reading Program for all ages!
