Wake Up! … Kansas Reads to Pre-K 2017
November is Kansas Reads to PreSchoolers month— an initiative of the State Library of Kansas. This year we were privileged to read to two amazing groups of preschoolers at Macksville.
Each group listened to the story: The Napping House, written by Audrey Wood & illustrated by Don Wood. We then stacked blocks to remember the order of the story. What came first? The snoring granny or the cozy bed? The snoozing cat or the dozing dog? Everyone knew the wakeful flea was at the top of the pile! 🙂
After retelling the story, students colored paper bag puppets that were sleeping and then awake. They colored (usually) the eyes the color of their own eyes and the mouth red. Then, we sang the song “Are you Sleeping?” with a variety of made-up verses that made them smile… with the last line always being: “Wake Up! … Wake Up!“
“Thank you” to the State Library for providing a new board book copy of The Napping House. If you haven’t read this classic book, come check it out from the library. Though, you may want to wait until after naptime to read it! 🙂
