Wetland Adventures with KWEC!
Today’s Guest Presenter was Mandy Kerns, from the Kansas Wetlands Education Center.
She took us on a virtual tour of the Wetlands (which you can access from home on the KWEC website), & she read the book: The Hike, by Alison Farrell.
Then, the kids divided up to explore four different stations.
The bird station had kildeer, woodpecker & oriole mounts, as well as eggs, feathers, & nests to explore.
The water station featured a variety of insects & water critters to explore, including ‘toe-biters’ & water boatmen.
At the rock-flipping station, kids counted insect legs & saw critters like scorpions, roly-poly’s, & a giant millipede.
Some were even brave enough to hold the hissing cockroach.
The final station featured a snake, and the kids used field guides to identify it.
The expressions on the faces of those wanting to touch the snake were priceless!
At each station, kids added to their Nature Journal, with drawings, rubbings, labels, observations, & more, just like the characters in the story we read.
Afterwards, everyone found a ‘lizard’ hiding the in library to earn their snack. Some found them hiding outside with binoculars.
We had 40 kids in attendance today & 20 adults.
Looking forward to the FINAL Story Hour & Pool Party next Monday!
Remember to get those Reading Logs turned in.
We will be CLOSED July 3rd & OPEN July 6th, in case you want to check out more books or turn in Reading Logs.
