Our 2017 summer reading program for adults and young adults concluded with 13 participants–five of whom successfully completed the program by reading at least six books & turning in a reading log.

In the adult category, favorite authors seemed to be: Debbie Macomber, Karen Kingsbury, Sandra Brown, Janette Oke, Max Lucado, & Lisa Scottoline, with YA also reading Janette Oke, plus Jeff Kinney & Kate DiCamillo.

Everyone who signed up for the program received a ‘Build a Better World’ stylus pen, a certificate of participation, & a sweet treat. Those who completed the program by turning in a log also earned prizes from an assortment of flashlights, duct tape, cooling towels, brownies & candy. (Building materials and rewards for all that hard reading 🙂 ).  Nicole & Isaiah were also chosen to receive a “Be the Change you wish to see in the World” t-shirt for their entries in that drawing.

This year’s reading log encouraged participants to either write a seven word summary or to share a favorite quote from the book. Here are a few responses:

“Aspire to inspire before expiring.” from Macomber’s Call Me Mrs. Miracle.

Summary of Oke’s book, Spring’s Gentle Promise: The caring story of family working together.

A quote shared from Catherine West’s book, The Memory of You: “And forgiveness fell like sweet rain upon the thirsty ground of her soul.”

From the children’s classic Hill of Fire by Thomas P. Lewis: “‘No my friends, no, no,’ said the farmer. He laughed. ‘One hill of fire is enough for me.'”

Finally, after reading a biography of Pocahontas, this 7 word summary followed: The movie is wrong! Real life story.
